first release for this new italian label, who claim to bring techno back to its top level. we re inclined to agree with those sentiments, as are the others who have received promos of the release. the a side consists of two deep and dark techno tracks, that should also find favour with more minimal djs. they are apparently by a popular northern european artist, going under the guise of ????. the label has kept such a secret that we dont even know who it is. on the b side, we have a soz adams (esperanza, archipel, gumption) remix of label head obtane and fris, which is a retro chicago style excursion, and german duo sebastian herre and obscure close the ep with a more detroit techno inspired track.

minus has released a first rate selection of home grown artist albums over the past 18 months, with heartthrob, false and gaiser all creating long players of real substance and this trend is set to continue in 2009 with arguably the label’s most significant release of recent times. louderbach’s long awaited second album autumn represents another jump in the evolutionary cycle of minimal techno, having developed from the largely instrumental project that gave us enemy love into a fully-fledged song based outfit. as a result, autumn has a much deeper feel than its predecessor and indeed breaks new ground, with the dark metaphors of gibby miller’s often chilling vocal performances fitting hand-in-glove with the ominous landscapes and broken architecture that troy pierce constructs so effectively. drawing on shared influences such as bauhaus, coil and joy division, the duo have conceived an album of emotional depth and exquisite detail, appropriating the best elements of these early-eighties pioneers and reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens to achieve a perfect balance of style and content. it’s the result of an unspoken understanding that spans thousands of miles from their respective homes in l.a. and berlin and this distant intimacy is a naturally occurring theme throughout the album, manifesting itself as dark, twilight tales of melancholy romance, burning obsession and the slow, disintegration of desire

he making of this record inadvertently began in cuba in january 2008. powershovelaudio was recording in la havana some of the best contemporary cuban singers and musicians. the resulting recordings were of an inspiring beauty. the situation was that powershovelaudio had this outstanding collection of voices, woods and brass, all infused by the tropical warmth. it was first-class material that should be put in the best hands possible, then maayan came to mind. ônight longö is a synthetic work. maayan has inexplicably, quickly and with incredible precision captured the essence and the expressivity of the cuban musicians and taken it to a hitherto unknown place. maayan is of course well-known for her diligent talent in inserting voices of quality in her mixes, but in this occasion the result is more than surprising. instead of concentrating in her signature minimal beats, maayan has experimented with different cadences, depths and moods, leaving behind her swirl a disconcerting record of inspired beauty. this art in this record is graced with photography by one of the best and most influential photographers in the world: moriyama daido. maayan asked moriyama san for permission to use the cover image, a request which moriyama san, after listening to the record, gladly accepted

after a recent guest performance on seuil’s eklo label, michael melchner - the young producer and dj from nuremberg - is back with another stunning ep for cargo edition. melchner is the resident-dj of the ‘kiss klub“ party series at nuremberg’s famous club ‘die rakete’, and music aficionados will have had their eye on this up-and-coming artist for a while now. this time around michael melchner dishes up three top-notch house tracks for us. “you understand“ is techhouse at its best, where he deftly holds and rides that balance between deepness and the dancefloor. a continously forward-pushing bassline is combined with a mysterious vocal sample and restrained breaks. „wooob“ grabs you with its devastatingly simple rhythm, while the bassline cuts through with a high dose of funk. topping the track off we have a vocal loop that shows off michael’s affection to the musical beginnings of house. this ties in nicely with the ep closer »just a skip« which reminisces over the sound of chicago. profound melodies, skillfully arranged vocal samples and a whole heap of soul suggest that michael melchner may just have produced a modern house classic. so again, just like on his first ep for cargo edition in may last year, michael melchner has managed to paint a musical portrait combining the present and the past into one classic moment.

played by brothers vibe, mike shannon, sebo k... from the beginning, marks dave hughes second ep release for palette. the three songs offer different variations on a single theme. from the beginning starts things off with classic sounding chords and punchy drums. from the start follows the theme in a more stripped down fashion, adding vocoded percussion with a powerful stab. start over continues in a more tricked out percussive form with clever programming and synth stabs. in all a club friendly three tracker and great follow up to his first ep on palette titled lets do it, the title track having recently been featured as the first track on john tejadas fabric 44 cd. dave is originally from ireland, but currently lives in los angeles. he has been djing since the age of 15, initially in dublin clubs along side many well known house djs. hes also made his way touring around europe, australia, asia and the us. he joined the current list of palette artists in the summer of 2007 with his first vinyl release lets do it. hes currently working on new productions with more soon to come.
